The soundtrack of Jab Tak Hai Jaan marks the first collaboration between legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra and composer A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by the celebrated Gulzar. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, the film’s romantic story provides a fitting canvas for Rahman’s melodic compositions and Gulzar’s poetic writing. The vocal lineup is equally impressive, featuring Rabbi Shergill, Mohit Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Harshdeep Kaur, Neeti Mohan, Raghav Mathur, Shilpa Rao and Javed Ali.
Rahman creates a soundtrack that blends contemporary arrangements with traditional romantic melodies and folk influences. “Challa” opens the album with a distinctive guitar-driven sound, while “Saans” is a sweeping romantic composition built around an evocative melody. “Ishq Shava” adds an energetic, international pop flavour, and “Heer” brings Punjabi folk elements into the mix. “Jiya Re” is youthful and spirited, while the title song and its instrumental counterpart add emotional depth. Gulzar’s lyrics give the album a poetic quality, expressing love, longing and devotion.
The vocal performances are a major strength. Rabbi Shergill’s earthy, distinctive voice makes “Challa” memorable, while Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal deliver “Saans” with warmth and tenderness. Harshdeep Kaur brings a beautiful folk sensibility to “Heer,” and Neeti Mohan gives “Jiya Re” its infectious energy. Raghav Mathur and Shilpa Rao create an engaging contrast on “Ishq Shava,” while Javed Ali and Shakthisree Gopalan add emotional richness to the title track.
Overall, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is a beautifully crafted romantic soundtrack with memorable melodies, poetic lyrics and a strong collection of vocal performances. Although some songs are more immediately appealing than others, Rahman’s compositions complement the film’s emotional journey and Yash Chopra’s signature romantic storytelling. Rating: 8/10.
