The soundtrack of Awarapan (2007) brings together composer Pritam with Pakistani singer-composer Mustafa Zahid, singer Annie Khalid, and lyricists including Sayeed Quadri and Asif Ali Baig. Directed by Mohit Suri and starring Emraan Hashmi, the film’s intense story of loneliness, love and redemption is reflected in the album’s brooding romantic sound. Mustafa Zahid’s emotionally charged songs became especially memorable, helping define the soundtrack’s identity. (Spotify; Wikipedia)
The compositions lean into melancholic melodies, atmospheric arrangements and rock-influenced textures. “Toh Phir Aao” and “Tera Mera Rishta” capture heartbreak and longing through sweeping hooks, while “Mahiya” brings a brighter pop-rock energy. “Maula Maula” adds a devotional, Sufi-inspired dimension, giving the album contrast and emotional depth. The lyrics focus on separation, yearning and inner conflict, fitting the film’s dark romantic mood.
Mustafa Zahid is the soundtrack’s defining voice, delivering “Toh Phir Aao” and “Tera Mera Rishta” with a raw, aching intensity. Suzanne D’Mello brings a polished pop sensibility to “Mahiya,” while Annie Khalid gives the remix a more energetic edge. Rafaqat Ali Khan’s expressive performance on “Maula Maula” adds a soulful, spiritual quality that stands apart from the album’s rock-leaning romantic songs.
Awarapan remains a compelling soundtrack, powered by memorable melodies, heartfelt vocals and a cohesive atmosphere of longing. Although the remix versions repeat some of the album’s core material, the original songs are strong enough to carry the collection. Its mix of romantic rock, pop and Sufi influence earns the album a well-deserved 8/10.
