Hindi Film Soundtrack Review: Azaad

Rating – 7
Music Director – Amit Trivedi
Lyrics – Amitabh Bhattacharya, Swanand Kirkire
Film Director – Abhishek Kapoor
Film Release – 17 January 2025

The Azaad soundtrack brings together composer Amit Trivedi with lyricists Amitabh Bhattacharya and Swanand Kirkire, creating a musical backdrop for Abhishek Kapoor’s period drama starring Ajay Devgn, Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani. The album also features an impressive vocal lineup led by Arijit Singh, Amit Trivedi, Hansika Pareek, Meenal Jain and Madhubanti Bagchi. This combination gives the soundtrack a blend of established voices and newer performers that fits the film’s themes of freedom, courage and rebellion.

Amit Trivedi’s compositions move comfortably between sweeping melodies, folk-inspired rhythms and energetic dance arrangements. “Azaad Hai Tu” has an uplifting, emotional quality, while “Ajeeb-O-Gareeb” brings a more playful and unconventional character. “Birangay” adds earthy rhythmic energy, “Uyi Amma” provides a lively dance number, and the reprise of “Azaad Hai Tu” returns to the album’s emotional center. Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics generally add character and narrative color, while Swanand Kirkire gives “Azaad Hai Tu” its poetic dimension.

The vocal performances are consistently strong. Arijit Singh brings warmth and emotional depth to “Azaad Hai Tu,” while his pairing with Hansika Pareek on “Ajeeb-O-Gareeb” creates an engaging contrast. Amit Trivedi and Meenal Jain give “Birangay” an earthy, energetic quality, and Madhubanti Bagchi brings considerable personality and rhythmic confidence to “Uyi Amma.” Amit Trivedi’s solo rendition of the reprise provides a more intimate closing performance.

Overall, Azaad is a compact soundtrack with enough variety to complement the film without feeling overextended. “Azaad Hai Tu” stands out for its emotional appeal, while “Uyi Amma” and “Birangay” add energy and folk-influenced character. The combination of Trivedi’s adventurous compositions, strong lyric writing and capable vocal performances makes the album an enjoyable listen, although it could have benefited from a few more songs to develop its musical world further. Rating: 7/10.
