The soundtrack of Mohabbat (1997) brings together the celebrated composer duo Nadeem–Shravan and lyricist Sameer, with Reema Rakesh Nath contributing the lyrics for “Pyar Kiya Hai.” Directed by Reema Rakesh Nath and starring Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna, the film’s romantic drama is reflected in an album built around love, longing and heartbreak. The vocal lineup—Kavita Krishnamurthy, Abhijeet, Vinod Rathod, Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan—gives the soundtrack plenty of variety. (Spotify; Cinemaazi)
Nadeem–Shravan lean into the lush, melody-driven romantic sound that defined much of 1990s Hindi film music. “Meri Jaane Jaana” and “Aaina Bata Kaise” deliver catchy hooks, while “Pyar Kiya Hai” stretches into a more dramatic, emotionally charged ballad. “O Baby Don’t Break My Heart” adds a more upbeat pop flavour, providing contrast to the album’s softer romantic numbers. The compositions are tuneful and accessible, though some arrangements and song structures feel familiar rather than especially inventive. (Spotify; Bollywood Hungama)
Kavita Krishnamurthy is the album’s most consistent presence, bringing clarity and expressive warmth to its romantic songs. Abhijeet adds a bright, youthful tone to “Meri Jaane Jaana” and “O Baby Don’t Break My Heart,” while Sonu Nigam and Vinod Rathod complement one another on “Aaina Bata Kaise.” Udit Narayan brings his familiar smoothness to “Dil Ki Dhadkan.” The performances are engaging, even if not every song reaches the emotional heights of the duo’s best-known soundtracks.
Mohabbat offers a pleasant collection of melodic 1990s romance, with several catchy songs and a strong roster of playback singers. Its best moments benefit from Nadeem–Shravan’s gift for memorable tunes, but the album’s unevenness and familiar arrangements prevent it from feeling essential from beginning to end. It remains an enjoyable period soundtrack with a handful of standouts, earning 6/10.
