The soundtrack for Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s historical romance drama Shikara (2020) stands as a profoundly poignant, soul-stirring musical tribute to the valley of Kashmir. Eschewing standard commercial formulas, primary composer Sandesh Shandilya creates a lush, deeply empathetic acoustic canvas heavily enriched by Irshad Kamil’s evocative lyricism. The 8-track album captures a heartbreaking dichotomy of love and displacement, highlighted by Papon’s brooding, melancholic delivery on “Ae Wadi Shehzadi” and the expansive, classical elegance of “Teri Arzoo Mein” featuring Kaushiki Chakraborty. Shreya Ghoshal and Papon lend an ethereal, retro-infused tenderness to the domestic bliss of “Ghar Bhara Sa Lage”, while the delicate, dreamy flows of “Mar Jaayein Hum” serve as the soundtrack’s emotional centerpiece. Complemented beautifully by Santoor maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori’s traditional, Kashmiri-flavored composition “Shukrana Gul Khile,” the album transcends a standard movie score to become a hauntingly beautiful sonic poem about memory, homeland, and enduring love.
